Balancing Two Modules, a Job, and Life: My Struggle with TM352 and TM359

As a part-time Open University student juggling two modules each year, life tends to get hectic between February and May. This period, when my October and February modules overlap, often feels like the most stressful time of the year. However, in just a few days, I’ll be down to one module, and I can’t wait to submit the EMA for TM352 Web, Mobile, and Cloud Technologies—what a relief that will be!

The Final Push for TM352 and TM359

While I’m wrapping up the enormous task that is the TM352 EMA, I’ve also been tackling coursework for my other module, TM359 Systems Penetration Testing. Balancing both has been a challenge.

TM359’s latest coursework included an iCMA, a series of multiple-choice questions worth about 10% of the module marks. Despite its lower weight, the iCMA’s broad coverage of the module material made it a time-consuming task. Additionally, there was TMA01, which came with a 3,000-word limit—the largest I’ve faced in my degree so far. This TMA wasn’t just writing; it also had a heavy practical component, which added to the workload.

The Challenges of Balancing Study, Work, and Life Events

The real challenge comes when you’re deep into a new module like TM359 while facing the most demanding tasks in TM352. Add to this the daily pressures of a full-time job and the inevitable life events that pop up, and it feels like a juggling act on a tightrope.

Time management advice is common, but the reality is that strategic studying is just as important. When time is tight, focus on the materials that will directly help you complete the next assignment. Modules like TM359 are full of interesting content, but sometimes you simply can’t cover everything. It’s about prioritizing what will get you through the next hurdle.

For TM359, there is some flexibility later in the course, especially after TMA02 is submitted in July, where you can explore a topic of your choice. If you’re planning to take the CEH exam (which comes with a discount for passing the course), you’ll need to revisit areas you may have skimmed over since the multiple-choice exam covers a wide range of topics, including content beyond the module.

Reflecting on TM352: A Surprising Balance

Despite the intensity, TM352 has been enjoyable. Surprisingly, for such a practical module, the coursework and EMA have leaned heavily toward the theoretical, with a 25:75 split between practical and theoretical aspects. This mix may suit some students better than others. Personally, my biggest challenge has been resisting the urge to endlessly tweak the practical components—it’s so easy to get caught up in perfecting every detail!

Final Thoughts

Balancing modules, work, and personal life can feel overwhelming, especially during the busiest months. However, by staying focused, being strategic about what to study, and managing your time effectively, it’s possible to navigate through the rough patches. As I close in on completing my current tasks, I’m reminded that the effort is always worth it in the end.
